bird! James thought "The tears of the phoenix possess
powerful healing properties." If only it could heal his
wounds right now, James thought grinning at the
wounds the monster had inflicted on him. "The
phoenix has the ability to teleport," that might allow
me to escape from Thomas. "The phoenix can carry
very heavy loads." I have to save this bird, it's my
only chance," James decided. So he spent his day as
normal, avoided going to Kate's party ("I'm not going
to risk making a fool of myself again in front of Kate
at this party"), went for a walk with Thomas and
agreed to go to the forest when Thomas suggested it
when they were all four at Kate's house. At the
entrance to the forest James tackled Thomas just as
he was about to kill the phoenix. The bird flew away,
singing a little song. James felt that nothing could
stop him, and despite the pain from his wounds, he
followed the small group. James was more attentive
than ever on this excursion, he looked for a sign of
the phoenix, and found it. The phoenix was there, a
few feet from the path, and was watching him. It
seemed to be waiting for him. James was about to join
it when he thought of Kate, he couldn't leave her with
Thomas. He took her hand and dragged her out of
the way, towards the phoenix. Kate asked why he
was dragging her out of the way. James put his hand
