            Buffaloes
              Marshy  -  Generally  found  in  Myanmar,  Philippines,  Malaysia,  Thailand,  Singapore,  and
                China.
              Breeds are Jerangi, Ongole, Sinhala, Manofi and walede.
              Types – Heavy weight and Light weight buffaloes.
              Jaffrabadi – Place of origin is Jamnagar of Gujarat.

              Gives 15-18 L per day.
              Contains 7-9% fat.
              Murrah – Found generally in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttarpradesh etc.
              Gives 25L milk per day.
              Nili Ravi – Found in Ferozpur of Punjab.
              Gives average of 1500-1800L milk per year.
              Bhadawari – Generally found in Gwalior and around areas.
              Male buffaloes are used for load carrying cattle.
            II. Dual purpose breeds
              Meant for both milk yield and draught work.

              Cows are fairly good milkers.
              Bullocks useful in ploughing the field, transport, car pulling etc.
              Hariana and Ongole are some examples.
              Ongole – Found in Nellore.
              It is larger in form. Matured male weighs – 700 Kg and female weighs- 400 Kg.
              Usually white in colour with grey marking.
              Bullocks are dark grey and hump is finely developed and erect.
              Bullocks – powerful and suits for cart and road work.
              Cows – good yielders, yields about 1700-3500 Kg milk per lactation.

            III. Draught Breeds
              Breeds are mainly meant for ploughing fields, pulling carts etc.
              Skin is well stretched and bulls used for draught works.
              Cows are poor milkers.
              Some main Indian breeds are Kangayam, Malvi, Hallikar, Amirthamahal etc.
              Kangayam - Mainly found from divisions of Dharapuram taluk of Coimbatore district in Tamil Nadu.
              Also found in Udumalapet, Palladam, and other parts of South India.
              Cattle of this breed are moderate in size; colour of body is white or grey with black markings.
              Horns – strong and curved upwards and downwards.
              Prominent forehead, neck is shorter, ears are smaller.
              Excellent for hard work.

              Yields about 666 Kg milk per lactation.
              Hallikar – Mainly found in South Indian states.
              Body- Dark grey in colour. Head is long with big forehead; face is long with small ears.
              Used for heavy ploughing, transport and other field works.
              Cows are poor milkers.
              Jersey – One of the oldest dairy breeds.
