incidents and activities in our lives as a witness, we do not get
attached to it, rather we distance ourselves from it. This is what is
called Sakshi Bhaav.
But is following the Sakshi Bhaav an alternative? You will end up
taking everything seriously if you do not adopt the Sakshi Bhaav. If
one of your friends abuses you or shouts at you; look at him as if you
are in a theatre drama and he is an actor. Now ‘in the drama’, your
friend is shouting at you. The moment you realize this, your racing
thoughts will disappear and you will feel very light. All that you have
to do is to adopt the Sakshi Bhaav for a day and your life will change
dramatically.
Sakshi Bhaav is not about running away from situations, it is rather,
a way of not letting undesired situations affect you in an adverse
way. But if you will not adopt the Sakshi Bhaav then you will end up
shouting back at your friend; you will get angry; your friendship will
get affected; there will be jealousy and you may even lose a good
friend forever. And above all; you will spend days at a stretch being
bitter about all this.
Osho gave a fine example of Sakshi Bhaav: if a swan or a heron flies
above a lake, it does not expect that his image will be formed on the
water surface. Even the lake does not desire to form the image, but
the image gets formed anyhow. The image disappears as soon as
the swan or heron flies away. Think about it in this way, if the bird
and the lake would have been concerned about the impression then
they both would have fretted. Similarly, we also try to hold on to
many impressions and images, we want them to stay with us, but it
is their nature, and their specialty to disappear. We should learn to
let go.
You are going to receive nothing but sadness if you attach yourself
to an image. We hold on to what happened in the past, we keep
remembering our past mistakes and bad experiences. By thinking
about the sad past, we are hurting none but ourselves. We have to
think about the future.
