             172 making instruction work

Sometimes it may be appropriate to add an “Equipment and
Materials” list somewhere in the lesson plan. This will provide
a ready checklist of the items that will be needed for complet-
ing the lesson. Some instructors prefer to add this list near the
top of their lesson plans, while others prefer to add a third col-
umn to the lesson plan itself. This third column is used as
space in which to list items (things) needed for each of the les-
             son components.
The main thing to keep in mind in lesson planning is to
adopt a format that will help you rather than get in your way.
And remember: There is no instructional reason why all your
lesson plans should look alike. Though you may have a
bureaucratic mandate to adopt a particular format, you can
always fulfill that requirement and then build a lesson plan in
a format that will help you and meet the needs of the objec-
             tives to be taught.
             Examples #2 and #3

The next two examples are from a criterion-referenced
module (i.e., instruction is designed to accomplish specified
objectives). The first may be partly self-paced; the second is
entirely self-paced. The module was borrowed from the nine-
module course entitled “Instructional Module Development,”
by R. F. Mager. It is intended for the population of students
learning how to be instructional developers and shows them
how to prepare the instructions that will be needed when their
course will be taught by someone other than themselves.
             Example #2: Prepare Implementation Instructions.

This example shows the module in lesson-plan format for use
by someone delivering the instruction by lecture.
