지리산 천년송(천연기념물 제424호, 수령 약 500년)은 전라북도 남원시 산내면 와운마을에
자리잡고 있다.
이 소나무는 임진왜란 이전부터 와운마을 뒤산에서 자생해 온 것으로 알려져 있다.
약 20m 간격으로 ‘할아버지송’과 더 크고 오래된 ‘할머니송’이 이웃해 있는데, 마을 주민들은
더 큰 할머니송을 ‘천년송’이라 부르며 마을의례의 중심으로 삼아왔다.
매년 정월 초사흗날, 마을의 평안과 풍년을 기원하는 당산제를 지내며, 제관으로 선발된 사람은
섣달 그믐날부터 외부 출입을 삼가고, 산 너머 계곡(일명 산지소)에서 목욕재계하며 특별히
근신한다.

The Jirisan Millennium Pine (Natural Monument No. 424, approx. 500 years old) stands in Waun
Village, Sannae-myeon, Namwon, Jeollabuk-do.
It is believed that this pine tree has been growing naturally on the mountain behind the village
since before the Japanese invasions of Korea in the late 16th century.
About 20 meters away stand two companion trees—the “Grandfather Pine” and the larger, older
“Grandmother Pine.” Among them, the villagers have long revered the Grandmother Pine as the
“Millennium Pine,” making it the spiritual center of their communal rituals.
Each year on the third day of the lunar New Year, the villagers hold a Dangsan rite here to pray
for peace and a bountiful harvest.
The ritual officiant, once chosen, observes strict purification practices—avoiding outside
contact from New Year’s Eve and performing ritual bathing in the valley beyond the mountain,
known locally as Sanjiso.
