전라북도 장수군 장수리 의암송(천연기념물 제397호, 수령
약 400년)은 장수군청 현관 바로 앞에 자리 잡고 있다.
높이는 9m, 가슴높이 줄기 둘레는 3.22m이며, 줄기는 하나이고
땅에서 1m 높이 부분에서 시계방향으로 뒤틀려 나선형을 이루어
마치 용이 몸을 비트는 모양과 비슷하다.
나무 윗부분은 여러 갈래로 갈라져 우산 모양의 아름다운 수형을
이루고 있다.
‘의암송’이라는 이름은 임진왜란(1592) 때 의암 논개가 심었다고
전해지나 확실하지 않으며, 지역 주민들이 옛 장수 관아 뜰에서
자라는 이 나무에 논개를 기리는 의미로 붙인 이름으로 추정된다.
오랜 세월 조상들의 관심과 보살핌 속에서 살아온 의암송은 생물
학적 가치가 높아 천연기념물로 지정·보호되고 있다.

The Uiam Pine in Jangsu-ri, Jangsu-gun, Jeollabuk-do (Natural
Monument No. 397, approx. 400 years old) stands directly in
front of the Jangsu County Office entrance.
It is 9 meters tall, with a trunk circumference of 3.22 meters at
breast height. The single trunk twists clockwise in a spiral about
1 meter above the ground, resembling the coiling body of a
dragon. The upper part of the tree splits into multiple branches,
forming a beautiful umbrella-like canopy.
The name Uiam Pine is said to be associated with the patriotic
heroine Nongae, who allegedly planted it during the Imjin War
(1592), though this is not confirmed. It is believed that local
residents named the tree in her honor, as it grew in the courtyard
of the old Jangsu government office.
Having survived through centuries of care and attention from
ancestors, the Uiam Pine is recognized for its high biological
value and has been designated and protected as a Natural
Monument.
