Abulafia House
One young author, Yosef Chachkess, rented an apartment in this house. In order to think
about a good story he sat on the balcony. From the balcony he saw a pretty young woman,
Rabbi Shlush’s granddaughter. The Rabbi saw that every day Yosef looks at his
granddaughter, and called upon him to come to his house. The Rabbi asked Yosef what he
does, and Yosef said that he writes books. “An author is not a profession” he said to his
granddaughter, “you cannot accept such a match”. Yosef’s heart broke, and he began to
write a story about the neighborhood, that is called “Tmol Shilshom” (literally: fore-time).
After many years hundreds of thousands of such books were sold, the author changed his
name to Agnon, and won (the) Nobel Prize. Sometimes an author is a good profession
after all…
