The Little People
In Neve Tzedek people live on the windows. These are the little people; the menshalach in
Yiddish. What do the little people do? When (people) open the windows in the house, the
little man near the window holds the shutter and then he looks like a man. If they close the
shutter the little man falls and then he looks like a woman. Every morning, after the
husband went to work, the woman closed the shutter and then the little man in the window
fell, and they saw a woman. That told her lover that it is possible to come in. If the
husband returned early from work, she immediately opened the shutter in his honor, and
then the lover saw that the husband was home. Maybe it’s just a story and there weren’t
really many lovers, and maybe the men didn’t really go to work…
