The 32-year-old cousins are becoming a
force in the Essar Group, driving its shipping,
logistics and ports businesses and introducing
‘new-age management’ practices

Anshuman and Rewant Ruia
AT just 32 years old, Anshuman Ruia
already has considerable experience
under his belt. His name can only grow
in stature in 2015 and beyond as both
India and major company Essar flex
their muscles on the world stage of
shipping and energy.
Anshuman is in charge of Essar’s
shipping and logistics and ports
business, a position with serious clout,
given India’s importance to global
shipping as it sends out vast quantities into practice; Rewant has been a
of oil products and takes in crude,
among other cargoes.
With a string of directorships to
his name, it’s a wonder he has time for
anything else, but by all accounts, he
still manages to squeeze in time for his
two passions: music and table tennis.
His cousin Rewant Ruia, who
joined the family business in summer
2005, is the same age and the two
men are the sons of brothers Ravi and
Shashi Ruia, who founded the $27bn
Essar Group.
Rewant, pictured, has been called
a “new-age manager”, meaning he
is a big advocate of IT and craftily
mixes Indian culture with Western
management styles to get the best out
of staff. Sounds fun.
He has also been called a natural
entrepreneur, who enjoys motivating
staff and ensures he is at the forefront China today, it is one thing to survive, let
of new ideas in the business world
— hence his current commitment to
studying for an MBA at Stanford.
There are plenty of opportunities
to put all those skills and learning

the group’s iron ore and coal reserves
overseas.

its importance to the global
commodities market, expect to hear
more about the busy Ruia cousins.

FOR non-state-owned shipbuilders in

But the outstanding performance
of the Singapore-listed Yangzijiang
Shipbuilding has made it an exception.
The yard not only has the largest
orderbook in tonnage terms, but
compared with its compatriot peers, it is
also more profitable than most of them.
Nevertheless, the continuation of
this prosperity has now moved on to
shoulders of the new chief executive,
Ren Letian, the only son of Ren
Yuanlin, YZJ’s legendary executive
chairman, and a magnate in the
country’s shipbuilding arena.
However, the 33-year-old, who has
just taken the helm from his father, is no
stranger to the industry.
Holding a master’s degree from
London Southbank University, he joined
the family business in 2006, and has
assumed managerial roles at various
levels and divisions ever since. The
company says Mr Ren junior has shown
“a strong management and business
brain” in his work.
Before taking his current office, he
was the general manger of Jiangsu New
Yangzi Shipbuilding and Jiangsu Xinfu
Shipbuilding, the company’s two major
yards, where it builds the 10,000 teu
containerships for Seaspan. It was under
