2.0 mi 50.8734, -0.2997 The South Downs Way. Here’s a chance to take a walk on this most
ancient of all roads, following in the footsteps of pilgrims, traders and invaders. This is a part of the
trail that stretches from the ancient cathedral city of Winchester in the west, first capital of
England, through to the white chalky cliffs of the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head at Eastbourne in
the east, almost all of its 160 kilometre length is blissfully off-road.
1 mi 50.8818, -0.3167 At the roundabout take the 2nd l on to Clays Hill s/posted “Steyning 1m”,
which will take you into the village of Steyning.
If you decide not to go into Steyning, take the 3rd exit l. from the roundabout s/p "Storrington /
Horsham A 283" to remain on the Steyning By-pass.
To visit the village of Washington, turn l. from The Pike, s/posted “Washington”. Otherwise
continue on the A283. When you get to a large roundabout on the far side of the village, take the
2nd exit l. s/posted "Pullborough / Storrington / Sullington A283".
6.9 mi / 50.9177 / - 0.4545 In Storrington follow the A283 through the
village. On the western edge of the village look for a black and white
sign on the l. s/posted "Petworth / Pulborough A283" str. ahd and
"Bognor Regis / Arundel / Amberley B2139" to the l.
It's worth taking a diversion here to the pretty village of Amberley with its
castle ruins (see photo) and Norman church.
To take the B2139, take the 2nd exit from the roundabout. As you do
that you will have an Esso petrol station on your r.
Side trip to Amberley
At this point you can take the B2139 as a side trip to the village of Amberley.
Take West St, the A283, westwards.
0.2 mi / 0.2 mi. At the r/bout take the 2nd exit on to Amberley Rd, the B2139 s/p "Bognor Regis /
Arundel / Amberley / B2139".
Expert navigator check: As you exit the r/bout you should have an Esso service station on your
right.
3.5 mi / 3.7 mi. 50.9093, -0.5338.Turn r. into School Road to enter Amberley.
Continuing on from Storrington towards Petworth . . .
Go str. ahd at the roundabout on to Pulborough Rd. Follow the A283 to and through Pulborough
and on to Fittleworth.
2.6m / 50.9652, - 0.5638. Fittleworth. A cluster of quaint cottages hug the wooded lanes and
streets of this beautiful part of Sussex.
To visit Lower Fittleworth and The Swan, turn l. immediately after the above instruction on to
Church Lane on the B2138. Follow the B2138 to the Swan Inn.
To continue towards Petworth, turn l. in the centre of the village following signs to "Petworth 3".
