movements while maintaining total body control. Shifting weight
to an on-balanced position when moving from one position to
another lit a light bulb in my head about having three weapons
available at that junction.
The Three Weapons concept was developed and tested early on
during my competition days. It became part of my strategy for
eliminating “telegraphing” my intentions. The longer it took for an
opponent to “see” a technique, the greater the chance of
succeeding.
An “anchored” position won’t allow
mobility and flow
I became known as a "sweeper", meaning I would take out a
supporting leg causing my opponent to either fall or be off-balance.
A famous line from the original Karate Kid movies was, “Sweep the
leg!” by the Cobra Kai instructor. The sweep was part of my arsenal.
Noticing that most players always telegraphed their intention to
sweep. The goal was to eliminate not only telegraphing the
intention to sweep but to eliminate telegraphing any intentions
until ready to launch an attack whether a kick, punch, or sweep.
The Three Weapons concept was solidified from this strategy!
The basic idea is whenever transitioning out of a neutral position
whether offensively or defensively, always shift into the Three
Weapons position. This means that shifting forward or back from
a neutral position, will be to a Three Weapons position to always
have three weapons available whether blocking, striking, kicking,
or sweeping. That is to say, two hands and one leg.
