“Recall we talked, ‘effective communication is not only what to say, but also what not to say.’

Words that can hurt are better unspoken. Honest feedback is essential, but it must be provided

in a way that is neither hurtful nor compromises the message. Prefacing the message with clear

intent provides the right context and helps.”

Dan was reminded of his first botched-up meeting with Tom.

Ron continued, “The notion that ‘it is difficult to give honest feedback to people’ is both

true and false. Without trust, it is extremely difficult because it would lead to misinterpretation,

misunderstanding and conflict. On the other hand, it can build trust if the intent is sincere,

selfless and without an ulterior motive, and the feedback is clearly articulated in a positive and

constructive way that inspires.”

“Let me now ask you another question. Do you think I trust you Dan?”

“I think you do Ron. Otherwise, it may be difficult for me to trust you.”

“Yes Dan. Trust begets trust, i.e. you will not be able to trust me if I do not trust you.

Similarly, mutual respect is an important prerequisite for trust. It is almost impossible for trust

to build without respect for the individual.”

“That is true Ron. But for gaining my trust, people have to earn it.”

“Well said Dan. We trust only those who have reliably and consistently demonstrated their

trustworthiness, not only to us but also to others. This last part is very crucial.”

“Would you trust a person who is consistent and honest with you but may behave in an

unscrupulous way with others?
