He paused and looked at Anne and Vik who seemed disinterested and were avoiding his
eye contact.
“We do not know exactly when but certainly over a year back, Betsy and I started to drift
apart. We do not know what had caused it. We were both aware that something is wrong but
did not know what to do despite being unhappy about it.”
“Few weeks back I started to consult a colleague about some work situation. That gave me
several learnings that I thought can be applied even in our personal life. I started to practice
those learnings at home and Betsy responded very positively to them. The most important
thing, that we later learnt, is that both of us were waiting for the other to initiate the first step.”
Anne and Vik body language had changed and were listening to Dan with interest.
‘It is a good sign.’ Dan thought and continued.
“In few weeks since then, we have stopped the drift and transformed our relationship. To
be honest, we were this close only during the early years.”
“I don’t want to impose, but if you feel comfortable, I can share few important learnings.”
Vik and Anne exchanged a quick glance at each other and nodded.
He shared The Expectations Conundrum and explained it to them.
“Every personal relationship has a set of unique expectations between the partners. These
expectations start as Wishes, emanating from some basic Needs. If these needs are not met
fully, wishes would begin to grow exponentially and harden into Demand, which are more
