Despite Linda’s eager looks, Dan did not want to rush into an answer. Using his new-found-

knowledge on communication, he wanted to feel & think first. But he could not continue to

stay quiet and had to say something, ‘I will have to think on the fly, so I must start with preliminaries.’

He thought to himself.

“Linda, I feel honored that you chose to confide in me on such a personal matter. It is

difficult for me to give you a straight answer. Moreover, it is a matter on which only you can

make a decision.” He paused and tried to look in control, but internally he was flustered and

was thinking feverishly what to say next. Suddenly it came and he relaxed. He made sure that

his external composure remained unchanged.

“Do you know the two most important reasons for people to leave a company?” As Linda

nodded in the negative, he continued, “salary or compensation is not one of them; the first is

‘relationship with direct boss’ and the second is ‘visibility of and confidence in career plan’.”

“The reasons are simple – one’s direct boss can make individual’s work life either exciting

or hell. And a clear career plan energizes and inspires the individual. I do not know if you have

visibility of your career plan, but I know that you have a fantastic relationship with Ron. In

case you have still not discussed your career plan with him, you easily can; this visibility will

help your decision making. Finally, before you decide, I suggest that you talk to Ron.” He

paused, thought for few more seconds, and added, “Not sure if I helped Linda, but I doubt if

I can do any better.” Dan concluded feeling satisfied with his handling of the situation.
