“Over the past few weeks, I have been pondering over your question that I have always

brushed aside earlier. I may still not have all the answers for you today, but I am beginning to

see what you will need to do to make Associate Director.”

Dan started to summarize all his learnings of past two weeks. He shared everything except

his meetings with Ron; he thought it was not appropriate to show that he was weak and was

seeking help.

Tom heard him but was not ‘listening’, wondering if this is the new diplomatic way to say

why I cannot be promoted. Although he wanted to give Dan benefit of doubt, this thought

constantly bothered him.

‘Is Dan prepping me up for the next performance review?’ ‘How convenient to convince me why I can’t be

promoted even before the results are reviewed!’

“Well Tom. I do not want to keep you any longer. You have a busy day ahead. We will meet

again and continue our conversation.”

Dan, who was now aware and conscious of the nonverbal communication, decided to cut

short as he had begun to sense that though Tom was physically here, he was not with him.

‘Very surprising. I am sharing with him such important learnings, but his mind is somewhere else. Probably

he is preoccupied with something else,’ he thought. ‘Anyway, I will catch him later when he is more relaxed.’

As Tom left, Dan’s phone rang, and he immediately got involved in the business of The

Global Company. The clock on the wall smiled and beckoned 9 am!
