“Ron whenever Jonathan and I have a conflict and he wins, I feel happy. In fact, I try to

make him win. Isn’t this the win-win engagement?”

Ron smiled, “Excellent question Dan that is particularly important to understand. Key is to

recognize whether your needs were also met. Often, we sacrifice our needs and allow our loved

ones to win. Has that been the case with you Dan?”

Dan was quiet as he tried to recall past incidences. As he thought of them, he realized that

he did sacrifice his needs to meet Jonathan’s. It was a revelation!

As Dan spoke, the words were soft and slow under the weight of this important revelation,

“I did compromise my need Ron. So probably it was Lose-Win.” He paused, took a deep

breath and continued, “But what if my real need is to make Jonathan happy and the conflict

was with my want? Isn’t that what we really desire for all our loved ones?”

“Another excellent point Dan,” Ron was smiling at the innocence yet the wisdom behind

Dan’s question. “Management theories typically fall flat when we try to apply them to our

loved ones, especially our children. But this is an intriguing angle that I have never explored.

Let us do it together.” Ron stopped, closed his eyes deep in thought.

“Where do we typically operate in Dan’s Triangle of Relationship when we deal with our

children?” Ron thought aloud.
