“What do you think is the difference between point 1 and point 2 Dan?”
Dan thought for a few seconds before answering, “I think at point 1 my need is fully met,
but no part of your need is met. Point 2 is the reverse, i.e. your need is fully met, but no part
of my need is met.”
“Absolutely! Said another way, at point 1, ‘I Win You Lose’.” He paused to create impact
of what he was about to say. “This is the ‘Ego Point’ – Not only do I want to win; I also want
you to lose. At point 2, ‘I Lose You Win’. This is the ‘Surrender Point’ – I allow you to win.
At Point 3, ‘I Win You Win’. This is the ‘Engagement Point’ – both our needs are met.”
“Everything between these points are compromises; some meet more of my needs, some
yours.”
Listening to this Dan had started thinking how often he gets to the Ego Point in a conflict
