1.5.4 Travel Distances
Approved Document B specifies the following maximum travel distances for a building of

In this instance, the travel distance limitations for escape in two directions are satisfied. It is
noted that a designated fire escape route should be kept clear (both Front-of-House and
Back-of-House) and consideration should be given to the onward external escape path from
the rear final exit. In instances where the single direction of travel cannot be met from all
areas of the store, it may be appropriate to designate a secondary means of escape to allow
for the assessment to take account of the provision of escape in more than one direction.
1.5.5 Exit Signage
All escape routes should be distinctively and conspicuously marked by an exit sign in
accordance with BS ISO 3864-1 and BS5499-4.
