Chapter 9 A walk in the forest
The next day, it was Granny’s turn to decide on the trip for everyone. She
decided it would be quite an adventure to walk through Godlingston Heath as
there was so much to see and then go for a swim on Studland beach. It was
only a short drive from Swanage so the gang were quite relieved as they had
done a lot of driving the day before. As usual, rucksacks were packed with food
and essentials and off they set. Ten minutes later, they were at their starting
point.
The pickup was parked in a National Trust car park. From here they followed a
footpath that would take them deep into the heath and adjoining forest. The
first part took them through a wood and then past a row of houses and finally
out onto the heath. It was an area mainly of gorse and heather but a bridlepath
ran through the denser parts.
After about half an hour they came to the edge of a golf course and stopped for
a short time to watch the golfers hit their balls and then lose them! Off they
went again, and the open ground turned to forest. Since it was quite sunny and
hot, a snack break was taken. They watched a buzzard flying over the heath in
search of its own snack and rabbits grazing on the grassy edge of the forest.
Then Bells heard a familiar sound which caught her attention.
“Are there big cats wandering around here, Granny?” she asked.
“Not as far as I know” replied Granny.
