Chapter 10 The Bike Ride
The gang decided it would be fun to meet at Grandpa’s house and then go on a
bike ride to Lyminge Forest and have a picnic. Everyone agreed that their
friends Amelia and Jackson should be invited to join them. Harry gave Amelia
a call and she said that they would both love to join the expedition. They
decided to meet at Grandpa’s house at 10 o’clock the following morning.
The following day at 10 o’clock all three families arrived at Grandpa’s house
equipped with bikes and rucksacks packed with food and useful things such as a
compass, a first aid kit and rope. Harry being the engineer, made sure he had a
puncture repair kit and a set of spanners.
Off they set with Harry at the front followed by Bells, then Amelia and Jackson,
then Ellie and finally James who had the responsibility of warning everyone if a
car should catch them up. Everyone was so happy pedalling along the road
chatting and laughing as they went. Occasionally James would yell “Car” and
everyone kept to the edge of the road.
It wasn’t long before they passed near where Amelia and Jackson live. The road
starts to rise up as they approach the hill to where Grandpa’s farm sits high
above the village. The cyclists started to feel the strain of the climb. On
reaching the steepest part it was clear to James that Ellie was really struggling.
“Stop, Harry. Ellie is struggling”, shouted James.
Harry was happy to stop and turned around to see what was wrong. On seeing
poor Ellie puffing and wobbling on her bicycle, he knew that there was only one
thing for it. He rode back down the hill the short distance to where Ellie was
now resting. He pulled a rope out of his rucksack.
“I’m going to give you a tow, Ellie”, he said. He tied the rope first to Ellie’s
bike just below the handlebars and then the other end just below his saddle.
“Right Ellie, pedal as hard as you can, I will do the rest”, said Harry jumping
back on his bike.
“Ready?”
“Ready”, said Ellie.
They both pedalled and the rope tightened and Harry could feel the extra load
he had to move.
