Daddy Richards said he would cut the tree to free him but Harry thought that
that could make things worse. Instead, Harry jumped into the tractor and
lowered the forklift.
“I am going to lift the tree so that we can pull Grandpa free”, said Harry.
Harry put the tractor into forward gear and edged forward with the forklift just
off the ground. Bells was worried that she and Grandpa might get run over if
Harry wasn’t careful and screamed at him “Harry, mind us”.
Harry carefully steered the forks under the tree and then raised the tree about
half a metre.
“Right everyone, let’s pull Grandpa away”, cried Harry.
“Wait, he may have a broken leg”, cried Bells.
“Are you in a lot of pain still?” Bells asked Grandpa.
“Not as bad, but my legs do hurt”, he replied.
Bells ran her hands down Grandpa’s legs feeling for a break or a cry of pain.
“Just bruised, I think, Grandpa”, she said.
“Do you think you could bear to be pulled free?”, she asked.
“Please try, I don’t want to be stuck here”, he replied.
Daddy Richards stood behind Grandpa and put his hands under Grandpa’s
armpits. The gang held onto Grandpa’s trousers as best they could and then they
edged Grandpa back from under the tree.
Ellie called Granny and asked her to come quickly to collect poor Grandpa.
“We need to get this tree out of the way”, said Daddy Richards. He set to with
his saw and reduced the tree to logs that the gang could then load onto the
trailer. Once loaded, Harry reversed the trailer down the hill into the farmyard.
Everyone was seriously impressed with his driving skills.
Granny appeared with the pickup. She was in quite a state, not knowing what
she was going to find.
Grandpa was still lying on the ground.
“Can you stand?”, Granny asked.
“I think I shall need some help”, he replied.
