“I am going to reduce the pressure slightly in the front tyres. That might just do
it. If not, I will adjust the tracking but that it is a longer job”, said James. He let
a measured amount of air out each front tyre.

“Ready to go”, said James triumphantly.

               Jack came up to them.

“Harry, that was a good start. I could see you were getting the hang of taking a
line. You don’t want to break too soon and then break firmly. Remember, you
won’t always have the width of the track to drive in because there will be other

carts so practise using less width. If you are ready, I will call you out in fifteen
               minutes.

Fifteen minutes soon passed during which time the boys devoured a chocolate
               bar each.

Harry got the nod from Jack and drove the cart back onto the track. He put his
foot gently down on the accelerator so that on approaching the first corner he was
not going too fast. He took a good line and the cart behaved perfectly. Bit more

speed and he was into the second corner. Again, a good line and the cart behaved
perfectly. Well done James, thought Harry as he pushed on a bit quicker. As he
approached the next corner, he applied the brakes a little firmer than usual, but
the cart still hurtled into the bend. Harry had to get his line spot on or else he was
going off the track again. He just made it but was a bit unsettled by the

experience, so he drove back to the pits.

“Brakes not gripping well enough, James”, said Harry on pulling up at their pit
               stop.

“OK, leave it with me. I will tighten up the brakes but be sure to test them
carefully when you go out next”, said James.

James got out his spanners and started to adjust the brakes. He worked

purposefully and made sure that everything was perfect. The left and right brakes
had to be balanced otherwise the cart would spin when the brakes were applied
hard. After about twenty minutes, he was happy with his adjustments.

Jack had been keeping a watchful eye on James and on seeing him finish,
scheduled Harry for his next run in five minutes.

Harry put his helmet on again and strapped himself into the cart.

Jack gave the signal and Harry set off once more.
