While still leaving the pits, he tested the brakes. They seemed fine at low speed.
Out onto the track and Harry put his foot down. The first corner loomed
immediately, and Harry applied the brakes in good time to see how they
performed. The cart slowed quickly and in a straight line. James is brilliant,
thought Harry, as he raced through the first corner, picked up speed and quickly
came to the second corner. He braked hard and the cart slowed so quickly that
Harry lunged forward but his belt saved him. He took the line and accelerated
out of the corner. Harry was starting to feel really confidant now and drove faster
than he ever had around the track. He drove for the full five laps and then returned
to his pit stop.
“Fantastic, James!” said Harry absolutely overjoyed at the progress he was
making.
James smiled and felt so pleased that he too had achieved so much.
“Now, James, all I need is a bit more power at the top end. She goes really well
up to half throttle but she is a bit dead above that”, said Harry who by now thought
that James was capable of any miracle to do with Go-carts.
“Leave it with me, Harry”, said James.
James picked up the tools, started the engine and proceeded to examine the
carburettor. He opened up the throttle and then started to adjust it. The engine
whined and then choked a bit, then whined again. This went on for some minutes
before James was happy that he had got the adjustment right. He turned off the
engine and then checked the fuel level. A bit more fuel, he thought, and
proceeded to top the cart up.
“Ready, Harry”, said James who was rather pleased with this latest adjustment.
Again, Jack had kept a watchful eye and could see that Harry was ready to go
again. “Five minutes, Harry”, he called.
Harry put on his helmet and belted himself into the cart. In his mind he was
thinking about each part of the course and how he might go a bit quicker.
Jack gave the signal and Harry set off.
This time Harry raced towards the first bend, knowing that he could brake
quickly. He took a good line and applied the accelerator firmly as he came out
of the corner. To his surprise the rear wheels spun and the back end spun round
and he ended up on the grass at the side of the track. Not a good start, thought
Harry. James had done such a good tuning job that Harry was going to have to
be careful when speeding up out of corners. He drove back onto the track and
