Grennell’s landslide election as Mayor of Natchez in 2016 is unprecedented in
modern-day Natchez politics. Running on a platform of transparency, inclusion,
accountability, and unity, Grennell received a sweeping 72 percent of the vote in
the Democratic Primary held in May. In each of the city’s six wards, a majority of
voters cast their ballots for Grennell. In the June General Election, Grennell was
elected Mayor of the City of Natchez with 92 percent of the vote.

                2012 – Phillip West

Phillip “Bucket” West entered the Democratic primary for governor
in March 2019. He was the first African American chair of the
Adams County Board of Supervisors, former House member and
former mayor of Natchez. He is a graduate of Alcorn State
University and served in public office for more than 50 years.

At Alcorn State, West picked up the nickname “Bucket,” which
stuck through all of his political career, including his years in the
Mississippi House where he chaired the Legislative Black Caucus. Phillip West
served on the Conservation & Water Resources, County Affairs, Judiciary A and
                        Universities & Colleges committees.
After finishing high school, West moved to Chicago to find a job where he saw
“black people and white people eating together in the same restaurants, doing
things together.” After seeing a new life in Chicago, he said he felt drawn to return
to Mississippi to go to school at Alcorn State near his home in Natchez.

He is a Mason and is affiliated with Omega Psi Phi, NAACP and the Elks Lodge.
