If you think you may have problems with the cost of the funeral, and
are in receipt of certain state benefits, then the Social Fund may be
able to help you. You will need the SF200 form to make a claim and
this can be made up to three months after the funeral. Please note
that most funerals will require a deposit even when the Social Fund is
being used. SF200 forms are available from the bereavement office,
the register office, but you will need to apply at your local Jobcentre
Plus or online.

It is advisable to contact the funeral director of your choice as soon
as possible to discuss arrangements. It is not necessary to wait until
you have collected the death certificate or spoken to the coroner.
However the deceased person cannot be collected from the hospital
unless the ‘green form’ has been issued or appropriate release forms
issued by the coroner. If you choose not to appoint a funeral director
and make your own arrangements, please contact the hospital’s
mortuary to discuss this further.

Repatriation
If the funeral is taking place outside England and Wales, an ‘Out of
England’ form will need to be issued by the coroner. After the death
has been registered, your funeral director will apply to the coroner on
your behalf.
