RADICAL LOVE
Firstly, David could have been reminiscing on the provision and
faithfulness of God, who was always present with him and his flock, as
he undertook the role of shepherd in the wilderness—surrounded by
numerous enemies such as the lion and the bear. During his time alone
with the Lord, David was fed with spiritual food in abundance. I believe
this has great significance for the season we are presently in. We will
get through it by sitting at God’s table and allowing Him to feed us with
spiritual food that will equip us for whatever the future holds.
This is not, however, a “hanging-on-for-grim-death” equipping. We
need to remember and establish ourselves in the truth of who we are: a
kingdom people, with a kingdom mindset, and blessings overflowing
down to us from on high!
A further possible explanation is that through this verse, we get a
glimpse of the “mother heart” of God. In the Middle Eastern culture of
the day, generally speaking, no man ever prepared a meal. This job was
the domain of women or servants. The host would provide the food, but
would never be seen cooking it.
A biblical example of this is found in Genesis 18 when the Lord
appeared to Abraham. He extended the invitation of hospitality, but the
job of cooking was left to Sarah and the servant. However, in Luke
12:37 (NLT), it says that Jesus puts on an apron and serves them as
they sit and eat:
