SESSION 1 : Who is This Shepherd-King?
“The servants who are ready and waiting for His return will be
rewarded. I tell you the truth, He himself will seat them, put on an
apron, and serve them as they sit and eat.”
It is such a beautiful thought to consider that the God of the whole
universe would demonstrate such love and humility by taking on the
role of a doting mother—serving up a tasty, nutritious meal for her
family.
This, however, is no ordinary food. It is even referred to as the food of
angels (see Psalm 78:24–25). It is the Body of Christ Himself, given
for us. Such nourishment brings everlasting life and sustenance to those
who are fortunate enough to partake of it.
Psalm 36:8 (NIV) also seems to show God in the role of serving, as it
says:
“They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from
your river of delights.”
However, the most famous verse of all is Matthew 20:28 (NLT):
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others
and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
My final example of the motherly/female aspects of God’s character is
found in Luke 22:27 (NIV):
