NYAA Youth Leaders Raising Funds For Needy Students
Struggling To Cope With The COVID-19
Four NYAA Gold Award participants: Mr Danish Sufi
Usyair, Ms Margie Ybanez, Ms Dela Cruz, Trisha
Mae Guzman and Ms Cheryl Onn Siew Ying from
ITE College East, successfully raised $86,000 to
help their peers who have been affected by the
COVID-19 pandemic. The group achieved this feat by
producing a video showcasing and telling heartfelt
stories of fellow students who have been struggling
during the COVID-19 pandemic.
On 20 November 2020, Mr Lawrence Wong,
Minister for Education, graced the virtual prize
presentation ceremony and praised the participants
for rising above their challenges amid the COVID-19
crisis. Stepping up to help others in need was
commendable.
On 11 December 2020, NYAA Executive Director Mr
James Soh presented the Certificate of Appreciation
signed by Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat to
the four ITE students.
Contributions of NYAA Young Environmentalists in 2020
Ms Cheryl Lee, an NYAA Gold Award holder
(2017 cohort), continues to play an active role in
advocating and raising awareness of the importance
of climate change mitigation and adaptation. In
2020 despite the COVID-19 pandemic, she was
actively involved in many virtual environmental
dialogues and forums. She also played a crucial role
in mentoring young leaders selected for the Young
South East Asian Leadership Programme conducted
by the United States Embassy in Singapore.
Cheryl was highlighted and featured by the press Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance,
on her environmental works and contributions. Mr Heng Swee Keat.
In addition, she was highlighted by Deputy Prime
Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic
Affairs and Minister for Finance, Mr Heng Swee
Keat, in his 2020 budget speech in Parliament.
“I have learned how to be an effective leader with
compassion and the willingness to serve others
during my NYAA journey. It has helped me well
and has provided me with many opportunities
to benefit society, including sustainability and
mitigating climate change.”
