born again by God’s Holy Spirit, but he’s

simply relating the futility and the

impossibility of trying to please God and

resist sin in the weakness of his depraved

and sinful nature (the flesh). Paul says in

verse 18, “For I know that in me (that is, in my

flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is

present with me; but how to perform that

which is good I find not.” But as a spiritually

born-again Christian, Paul unquestionably

found “how to perform that which is good,”

because in Galatians 5:16, Paul instructs

believers to “Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall

not fulfil the lust of the flesh,” and in verse

24, Paul says, “And they that are Christ's

have crucified the flesh with the affections

and lusts.”
