heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my
portion of all my labour. Then I looked on all
the works that my hands had wrought, and on
the labour that I had laboured to do: and,
behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and
there was no profit under the sun.” (Ecc. 2:9-11)
Solomon no doubt experienced the joy of family
and having grandchildren, and yet even family
could not bring complete fulfillment to his life.
In fact, Jesus said in Matthew 10:34-37 that
there would be strife in family relationships –
not peace – when a person becomes a genuine
born-again Christian:
“Think not that I am come to send peace on
earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
For I am come to set a man at variance against
his father, and the daughter against her
mother, and the daughter in law against her
mother in law. And a man’s foes shall be they
of his own household. He that loveth father or
mother more than me is not worthy of me: and
