“Adriana, your dad and I will use your car to drive Emilia
to the hospital. You, Samaria, and Katie can follow behind in
my car,” she said as she handed Adriana the keys to her car.
“Yes ma’am, Adriana said as she, Samaria, Katie dashed
to grab their purses.
“Hurry, Sweetie,” Mrs. Sanchez said to Mr. Sanchez. “I’m
coming. I just had to grab my wallet. Got everything, ladies?”
Mr. Sanchez asked as he set the alarm system and closed the
front door behind him.
“The contractions should ease up a little,” Mrs. Sanchez
said. “They have,” Emilia said.
“Good!” Mrs. Sanchez said.
“Is that it?” Emilia asked.
“Not quite, Mrs. Sanchez said.
“Oh, God, more?” Emilia exclaimed.
“Yes, Sweetie, more,” Mrs. Sanchez said while laughing.
‘I hate this signal,” Mr. Sanchez said while waiting at the
very long stoplight.
Oh, Emilia said as the contraction started up again.
“Sweetie, just run the light.” Mrs. Sanchez said.
“Okay. If you say so,” Mr. Sanchez said as he took off
speeding, running the third light. Although he had no siren,
the car sped along as if it had slashing red lights that part-
ed crowds of vehicles as a knife that cleaves cleanly through
melted butter. The screeching tires and wail of the siren madly
barreled through the streets to deliver precious cargo to safe-
ty.
“We will get that ticket in the mail,” Mrs. Sanchez said as
a picture of Adriana ’s license plate was taken.
“We will just have to send the DMV a letter about our
rushing a pregnant woman to the hospital along with the tick-
et and pictures of Emilia’s baby to prove it.”
