Will the Real Christians Stand Up
Mrs. Sanchez and Emilia laughed. “So, you’re not going
to send the check also?” asked Mrs. Sanchez. “Not if I can
help it,” Mr. Sanchez said as he made another sharp turn.
Mrs. Sanchez and Emilia laughed. “Please don’t make
me laugh,” Emilia struggled to say. When the pain passed, it
was only for a minute or so, and she breathed with closed
eyes, unwilling to re-engage with life outside of her own body.
“Just hold on, Emilia, we will be to the hospital in about five
more minutes.”
To reply, Emilia had to find herself from the deepest re-
cess of her own mind and drag herself forward, use her voice,
and open her eyes. “Okay,” she said while enduring the con-
tractions, which seemed to come more rapidly.
“Another red light, Mr. Sanchez said, approaching the
signal just as it turned green.
“Just hang on, Sweetie, we’re almost there, Mrs. San-
chez said, looking at the car’s odometer which had reached
100mph.
Heeding the request to slow down from Mrs. Sanchez,
Mr. Sanchez slowed his speed down to 80 miles per hour. “Are
the girls behind us?” Mr. Sanchez asked.
“I believe so,” Mrs. Sanchez said while looking back to
verify that Adriana, Samaria, and Katey were still behind them.
“Just breathe, Sweetie, Mrs. Sanchez said while holding Emil-
ia’s left hand as the tears continued to flow down her face.
“Here we are,” Mr. Sanchez said while pulling inside the
emergency room parking lot.
“How can we help you?” one of the hospital security
guards asked.
“We have a young lady getting ready to have a baby,
Mr. Sanchez said excitedly.
The security guard called for a nurse.
