Will the Real Christians Stand Up
“I can’t give you anything to drink, but I can provide you
with ice chips. Would you like some of those?” the nurse asked.
Emilia shook her head as tears streamed down her face.
The nurse ran quickly to get Emilia some ice chips. “Here
we are,” the nurse said as she entered the room with a cup
filled with ice chips.
“Thanks,” Emilia said as the nurse handed her the cup
filled with ice chips.
“Now that the contractions have ceased for a moment,
can I get you to change into this gown?”
“Sure,” Emilia said with a mouth filled with ice chips. Emil-
ia changed into the garment that the nurse provided her to
put on. “And here’s an extra blanket,” the nurse said as Emilia
walked out of the restroom.
“Thanks,” Emilia said while shaking as she laid back com-
fortably in the bed.
Dr. Chester finally reached the door of Emilia’s room,
brown and dull like all the others. With a brief knock, Dr. Ches-
ter entered, smiling kindly and opened the door wider. “Good
evening, my name is Doctor Chester.”
Emilia smiled pretentiously.
She was pleased to see the silver hair on the doctor. Like
some guy, he had a face you’d ask for directions in the street,
non-threatening she supposed. He could be a news anchor
in a suit, clean-cut, but with that loveable smile that was only
ever removed from his features when he needed to be seri-
ous. His movements were unhurried, choreographed, and de-
liberate.
He could tell from the look on her face that the contrac-
tions had started back. He addressed Emilia directly, explain-
ing the next procedure and what its purpose was. “I have
to check and see if you’ve dilated, the doctor said. Is that
okay?”
