checked to see if Emilia had dilated. “Goodness, this baby is
ready to come. Give or take an hour and a half or two, you
will be in delivery.”
“Really, I mean not any sooner?” Emilia asked. Everyone
laughed.
“I wish I could say sooner, but my expertise indicates pos-
sibly an hour. Have you decided to go through with the epi-
dural?
“I haven’t felt any pain from the contractions for 30
minutes. I prayed to God that he would ease the pain of the
contractions, and he answered my prayer,” Emilia said with a
smile.
“Incredible,” Nurse Flowers said. Personally, I never insist
that a mother get the epidural shot. Though it eases the pain,
it’s just not good to put that much medicine in your spine or
body. Although not proven, I think that it can cause a long-
term detrimental effect.
“I had a natural birth both with Adriana and Natalia, her
sister. However, I had an epidural with my son, Diego.” Mrs.
Sanchez said.
“You may not believe this,” Nurse Flowers said, “But I had
natural childbirth will each of my three boys.”
“Ouch, Emilia said. Everyone laughed.
“And it was ouch,” Nurse Flowers said. “My husband left
the delivery room when I had my first two sons, Justin and Mi-
chael. He couldn’t stand to see me going through that kind
of pain.”
“Yours did too!” Mrs. Sanchez exclaimed. My husband
left when I had Adriana and Natalia, but somehow he man-
aged to hang in there when I had Diego. The nurse had to
hold his hand the entire time when it should have been him
holding my hand. Everyone laughed.
