Emilia shook her head, yes. It was oddly comforting to
be treated like a child, yet with respect, that transferred con-
fidence amid her fear and relentless pain.
“Can I get you to sit with your legs up, please?”
The nurse assisted Emilia with getting her legs up and in-
side the metal stirrups.
His voice was deep as he spoke to Emilia, “You’ve dilat-
ed 5 cm which is close. It’s time to get you into your labor and
delivery room.
“Is it supposed to be this painful Emilia asked?” as the
contractions eased for a moment.
“Unfortunately, it is, but you do have the option of get-
ting an epidural shot.”
“My mother told me that it would ease the pain, but it’s
dangerous.”
“That might be an option,” Emilia said as she hesitated a
moment to think.
“Well, then, when we get you to your next room, you
can let me know what you have come up with later. Deal?”
“Deal,” Emilia said as the contractions returned. “Yes,yes,
the epidural will be fine.”
“I figured that would be the option,” Dr. Chester said.
Turning to the nurse, he said, “Let’s get her to the delivery
room as soon as possible.
“Emilia, I know you’re in pain, but I have to get you
hooked to an IV. Is that okay?” the nurse asked. Emilia shook
her head, yes. I’ll get everything set up. Hopefully, the con-
tractions will ease for a moment by then,” the nurse said. She
proceeded to cover Emilia with a sheet and two blankets and
started the process of inserting the IV. “Can I see your left arm,
please?
Emilia moved her arm in the direction of the nurse.
The nurse tied a rubber around the top part of Emilia’s arm,
