Returning to the call, the governor said, “I’m sorry, good
morning, young ladies.
“It’s such an honor to meet with you by phone, and I
can’t wait to meet you in person on December 1. I’m a Chris-
tian, and I don’t think prayer should be removed from school.
I think students should be allowed to call on the name of Jesus
if they choose, whether it’s in or out of school. A lot is going on
behind the scenes of which you all are not aware. When this
decision was made, I was on vacation in Europe with my fam-
ily. Let’s just say, for now, your march will have a huge impact
on overturning that decision. We will talk more in my office
privately on December 1 if you know what I mean.”
“Yes, sir,” Samaria said.
“We look forward to seeing you,” Adriana said. “Thank
you,” Katey said.
“You’re quite welcome,” Governor Jackson said with a
soft laugh as he ended the call.
Elated at the outcome of the call, Mayor Bartley advised
the girls that she would be going to Tallahassee on December
1. “If it’s ok, I would like to sit in with you all and the governor in
the meeting. Is that ok?”
“Yes ma’am,” the girls said one after another. “it would
be an honor,” Samaria said..
The News
The crowd of students flowed down the narrow avenue
outside the school the same way the Thames always meets its
banks. The mood of the students was one of concern and anx-
iousness. One could see it beneath the surface of their faces.
Of the hundreds of students, few had not seen the Youtube
video that went viral and was also picked up by Yahoo and
most local news stations. Reporter Rueben Tates stood outside
the school’s busy corridor.
