1. Preliminary Research
Preliminary research is the process of investigating multiple problems as
considerations for product development. Using theoretical studies, empirical
studies from relevant research, and field research, problem identification and
need analysis (NA) are performed. The theoretical study examined theories,
principles, and concepts associated with writing learning, assessment, and the
use of ICT through a search of the scholarly literature. In addition, relevant
research was conducted on developing writing skills learning models by
integrating the assessment process and the use of ICT. The researcher
concluded, based on the findings of this study, what previous researchers had
done and identified opportunities to complement or continue the previous
research.
NA was conducted by distributing a questionnaire to 165 students of the
English department at a state university in Sulawesi Tengah, particularly those
students who had enrolled in writing courses. She also interviewed five teachers
who have experience in teaching writing courses. The former focused on the
students' target and learning needs, whereas the latter sought to elicit lecturers'
viewpoints on writing instruction. In short, this preliminary study intends to
gather detailed information about the current state of writing teaching in the
target setting. As a result, the development process can be more thoroughly
planned and tailored to the needs of the field.
