1. Lack of information on the virus
In vacuum of credible and reliable information, fake news flourishes.
Due to the nature of Novel Coronavirus (the initial designation of
COVID-19), nothing much was known about the virus. This created a
state of vacuum. The public wanted as much information about the
virus, but governments and health institutions didn’t provide any
information on the emerging virus.
What can the public do? They latched on to any news and information
on the World Wide Web. Whether or not an information is true is
secondary. The public got the answers, just not the correct ones. They
were left off to fend for themselves and let their imaginations run wild.
2. Lack of public trust in governments
Public trust in governments was at an all-time low. It is a global
phenomenon attributed to the local and international political
conditions. When there is a strong resentment and distrust towards the
government, policies concerning public health will be difficult to
implement.
3. Algorithms
Social media platforms use algorithms to determine contents that a
user will consume. A particular content will target a particular target
audience. What a user consumes is determined by the user’s habit
and preferences mined from their internet activities. A user consumes
