PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
TEACH-A-RAMA Number of Sorors: 2525
Description of Activity: The Teach-A-Rama Committee gave a presentation about Cultural
Relevance in the 21st Century. The emphasis was on the significances of understanding and
connecting with students in order to fully engage them in the learning process
LEADERSHIP TRAINING: Number of Sorors: 15 15
Description of Activity: Our Chapter Committee Activities help us to develop our professional
leadership skills in many areas. In addition to our Teach-A-Rama professional development and
the revealing novels our book club reads, this month our book club is also reading a leadership
training book entitled Dare to Read by Brene Brown. It a revelation of the study of organizational
leadership. It suggest we examine who we are because a major premise of the book is that,
studies reveal, we lead according to who we are. Our Constitutional & By Law Committee met to
coordinate our Chapter by Laws with the NSPDK Inc., MOPP.
PUBLIC RELATIONS: Number of Sorors: 30 Others:
Description of Activity: We have our own chapter webpage. "My Sister's Keeper""where we
post many of our Chapter events, as well as, our regional webpage. Sorors K. Lettsome and S.
Wilson do a wonderful job photographing and using those photos to create our Regional Chapter
Scrapebook. In the future we look forward to advertising our events in local newspapers and TV.
COMMISSION ON CIVIL RIGHTS, EDUCATION AND LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS
Number of Sorors: 5 Description of Activity: The Beta Omicron Commission on Civil Rights,
Education and Legislative Affair Committee has been working hard across NYC representing
NSPDK Inc., call to action. Members of the Committee have participate in a number of
educational events and activities. Starting with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Epsilon Pi
Omega's Annual HBCU/Financial Literacy College Fair in Queens, N.Y. Next the committee
members attended a fireside chat a Molloy College with Dr. Christopher Emdin author and
educational speaker focusing on engaging the learner. Committee member also attended a fireside
chat with Executive Superintendent of Southern Queens. Dr. Andre Spencer where they discussed
teacher retention and the need for relevant curricular. Our Committee Chair participated in a
Teacher Policy team called Educators 4 Excellence addressing educational equity, teacher
diversity and quality teacher professional development. The Team had the opportunity to discuss
a policy paper they developed at a meeting with Senator John Lui of School Dist. 27 Queens, NY.
The outcome of that meeting has been to launched a meeting with the NYC and NYS Educational
Committee Chairs.
INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS (SISTERHOOD) Number of Sorors: 20
Description of Activity: In addition to our annual Summer Backyard Potluck Event, some of
the Chapter Sorors met up at a local clothing boutique to select fashion show attire to model at
our Annual Scholarship Gala. We travel together via carpool, bus and plane to various NSPDK
Inc., events. We also meet monthly for book discussions with our Book Club membership. We
attend theater and movie nights, baby showers, birthday celebrations and going away parties for
each other. We are a close knit Chapter not because we work together. We are a close knit
Chapter because we respect, trust, and care for each other.
FOUNDERS' DAY: Number of Sorors: 118 Others: 1008 Description of Activity: Founder's
Day 2019 was celebrated at the Springfield Gardens Presbyterian Church. The keynote speaker
for the occasion was Elder Barbara Campbell. Sorors were invited to participate in a flag
ceremony. Basileus Diane Hewitt gave the history of the sorority and the Y.E.S. Program. A
donation of $100.00 was made to the church's Christian Education Scholarship Fund. A delicious
meal was served followed by the torching lighting ceremony in the education building.
SENIOR TEACHERS/SECOND CAREERS/RETIRED SORORS VOLUNTEER
PROGRAM (RSVP): Number of Sorors: 9 Others: 1109 Description of Activity: Once a
month The Retired Sorors Volunteer Program (RSVP) Committee service 100 students at our
adopted school by Reading-Aloud to their Pre-K and Kindergarten students.
