making decisions. This is also stated in the Qur'an Surah
An Nisa verse 59:
رْمَ ْ ُ َ ٰ َّ َ
لَا ىِلوا َل ْ وُس َّ رلا اوُعْيِطَا َ ه اللّ اوُعْيِطَا ا ْْٓ وُنما َنْيِذلا اهُّيَا

ا ِ للا ۗ ر ِ خلَا ِ م ْ وَيلا ِ ه اللّ ْ نِا ِ ل ْ وُس َّ رلا ِ ه اللّ ىَلِا مُتْعَزا ْ نِا

"Obey Allah and your messengers and
leaders" (4:59)
A meeting in the family is chaired by the mamak
or uncle and if the meeting is on a larger scale then the
leader is held by the penghulu. In taking the agreement,
the penghulu always guided by a truth that was revealed
by Allah SWT in the Qur'an and hadith and ijtihad. The
results of the agreement can be used as a reference
according to "alua jo patuik" which means it is
considered very reasonable and proportional. Fair means
reasonable and proportional means putting something in
its place (fair and acceptable to conscience).
In principle, this proverb shows that the Minang
people have an obedience to the leader and the leader
obeys the results of the deliberation which cannot be
separated from the guidance of the Qur'an and Hadith.
