This proverb shows how custom gives space for
freedom of expression. Minang customs uphold freedom
of thought; adat accepts differences and diversity, so that
in Minang adat there is no distance between members of
the community; between individuals with other
individuals; for example a child with his father; nephew
with mamak (uncle).
c. Free to Submit Criticism (Check and Balance)
With the egalitarian understanding that lives in
Minang customs which views all members of the
community as having the same social status (status), in
adat there is no absolute or absolute power possessed by
a member of the Minang community even though he is
a king.
As it is known that in the Minangkabau
government there are three kings, namely the king of
nature, the king of adat, and the king of worship. The
king of worship regulates matters relating to religion;
traditional kings regulate affairs related to customary
