culture, the surau tradition is maintained but as a
place of worship for Muslims.
Administratively, the surau is managed
by community leaders, but besides that there is
also a surau which is managed directly by an
ustadz (buya) its founder. In the surau, education
takes place dynamically and communicatively,
dynamic means following the symptoms and
social developments that appear outside the
surau, and communicative means responding to
challenges (problems) that occur outside the
surau (in the community). Therefore, the surau
functions as a place of worship or religion and
also functions as a socio-cultural institution.
As a religious institution, the surau
organizes education of the Qur'an, worship,
knowledge of morals, fiqh (shari'ah), tasawuf,
etc., the more dominant question and answer
method has formed the product of the surau as
graduates who have a strong religious attitude.
Besides being a religious institution, the surau
also functions as a socio-cultural institution, the
surau is used as activity centers such as a place
