1297 a note was found on a tombstone in Aceh that the first Islamic
king in Indonesia was named Malik al Salih.
About where Islam came to Indonesia, the experts do not
agree. There is an opinion from Bengal, while others mention from
India (Gujarat) and China. But a somewhat similar opinion states
that Islam entered through the Muslim trade route to Southeast and
East Asia in the 10th century.
The Strait of Malacca, which is located at the crossroads of
the road to East Asia, has a vital role. What is clear is that the
Malacca Strait was controlled by the Srivijaya kingdom, Buddha.
But already in a weak condition. Samudera Pasai, who embraced
Islam, began to actively participate in the trade arena, so that he
could relate to several kingdoms in Java.
After the fall of Malacca to the Portuguese in 1511, the
collapse of the Majapahit kingdom in 1525, Samudera Pasai
suffered a setback. The Sultanate of Aceh developed and gradually
became strong, especially during the time of Iskandar Muda
(1607–1638 AD), trade routes began to change to the west coast
which was usually on the east coast.
This resulted in the control of the small Minangkabau
kingdom by the Aceh sultanate, so that Islam entered from the
