Unit 5
Sudden Turn-over / Resignation
Choi: Are you sure that he is going to drop such a big project all of a sudden?
Park: Yes, I think that he’s been offered better deals by several other companies. That’s why he
decided to quit.
Choi: Is there anyone who can replace him and handle the project he’s taking on? It is a very im-
portant project as you well know. I wonder if anyone will take on the job he left, considering
that he only gave a short notice for his resignation.
Park: Well, I just can’t think of anyone off hand, but there should be somebody we’d like to pro-
mote for the project. We have to think of one fast or our deal will be drastically affected by his
leaving. We don’t want that to happen. We need this deal badly.
Choi: Do you mean someone to take over for him right away? Let’s make a call to the Human Re-
sources Office. I hope the staff can recommend someone who can take the job.
Park: Yes, that’s a good idea. Anyway, let me think for awhile about this situation, and I will inform
you of my decision as soon as possible.
1. How do you motivate people to stay in your company?
Sample answer:
We provide them with attractive privileges and benefits. We also see to it that our monetary
compensation is competitive and relevant to the times.
2. How would you assess the turnover in your company?
Sample answer:
It’s stable. We do have some people who resign from time to time, but they are easily replaced
by qualified applicants. We also have several employees who have been with us for so long
now.
3. How do you cope with sudden resignation of people who have pending
tasks or projects?
Sample answer:
We get on with life. We have to move on, and we move on by looking for people who can
handle the work. We also train everyone in the staff to make them qualified for any position in
case someone resigns.
