Procedure
1. Explain the Procedure to the patient
2. Refer to the chart. Be sure you have the intended site of entry.
3. Perform hand hygiene
4. Prepare adhesive tape
5. Check I.V. solution and medication additives with Dr.’s order.
6. Assemble all equipment and bring to the bedside
7. Open and prepare IV bag & remove air from the tubing
8. Squeeze drip chamber to fill 1/3 -1/2
9. Wear a clean glove if needed
10. Place rubber & towel under the arm
11. Apply tourniquet about 3cms above the intended site of entry.
12. Observe & palpate for a suitable vein
13. Cleans the skin with alcohol swabs thoroughly & place the used swabs in the receiver.
14. Wear a sterile glove and put a fenestrated towel on the site/the two pieces/
15. Place non -dominant hand about 1 or 2 inches below the entry site to hold the skin taut
against the vein &to support the forearm from the backside.
16. Enter the skin gently with the catheter held by the hub in the dominant hand, bevel side
up, at a 15-30 degree angle.
17. Check if you are in the vein by drawing back the syringe. (Blood returns if you are in the
vein)
18. When the blood returns through the lumen of the needle or the flashback chamber of the
catheter, advance either device 1/8 to 1/4 inch farther into the vein.
19. Release the tourniquet gently by holding with a sterile glove
20. Press the vein above with non-dominant thumb
21. The catheter needs to be advanced/attached until the hub is at the vein puncture site
22. Support needle with sterile gauze or sterile cotton bolls. If necessary to keep it in the
proper position in the vein
23. Anchor the I.V. tubing with the adhesive tape to prevent pull on the needle/butterfly
method/
24. Start the flow of the solution by opening the clamp.
25. Place arm board or splint under the arm and bandage around.
26. Adjust the rate of flow.
