UNIT-THREE: CARE OF THE PATIENT, SURROUNDING, AND EQUIPMENT
Objectives: At the end of this unit the trainees will be able to:
1. Give care to medical equipment
2. Apply principles of patient care during admission and discharge
3. Give care to the patient surroundings
3.1 Care of the equipment
General instruction
Rinse used Equipment in cold water.
Remove any sticky material such as blood
Wash well under running water
Rinse well under running water
Disinfect or sterilize used Equipment with appropriate methods
Store Equipment appropriately
3.1.1 Care of equipment after use
An empty bedpan or urinal & rinse well. If possible soak in 2.5% Lysol for at last half
hour
Wash your hands after completing Procedure
Return to the patient's bedside or the utility room.
3.2 General care of the patient on admission
Purpose: To help the new patient to adjust to the hospital and to alleviate fear and
worry from the new environment
Procedure
4. The patient’s room should be prepared and well ventilated
5. Accompany patient to his room.
6. Assist the patient to bed (screen the patient if undressing in the award.)
7. Provide a clean gown.
8. Personal properties should be taken and put in the locker or cup bored by leveling.
9. If there are no such facilitates the patient's personal properties should either be sent
home with his relatives or stored in the hospital after a property list and level had been
made.
10. Give an admission bath and observe a patient for unusual signs and symptoms. Observe
for head and body lice; take measure if any
11. Take and record vital signs
12. Take ordered specimen for test
