1. Standing in neutral stance with your partner facing you,
advance and slowly extend a jab and cross. Your partner will
step in the direction adjacent to his or her lead foot and
pivot 90 degrees to avoid getting hit.
2. Switch roles so that it is now your partner’s turn to
advance, and slowly extend the jab and cross. As your
partner advances, take a step in the direction adjacent to
your lead foot and pivot 90 degrees to avoid getting run
into.
Practice this drill while being mindful of keeping your center
of gravity in control and maintaining your balance. Aim to
return to neutral stance as you move around.
SHOULDER TAP
This is an effective drill that helps you learn to
gauge, measure, and adjust how big or small of a
step you need to take to be out of range as attacks
are initiated, but to quickly step within range to
deliver your own counterpunches. This is especially
challenging because you must be moving on your
