5. INSPECT THE CROSS SHAFT
(a). Inspect the bearing journal of the cross
shaft for the surface wear.
(b). Measure the bearing journal of the cross
Bearing journal shaft with vernier caliper.

1089 series 26.68 mm 0.10 mm

If the wear is beyond the limit range, replace with
a new cross shaft.
(c). Inspect the clearance between the cross
shaft and the needle bearing with a bench
screw and dial indicator.
• Don’t clamp the cross shaft directly
with a bench screw, wrap the place
with soft cloth to avoid the damage of
cross shaft.
• A new needle bearing shall be used
during the inspection.
• Set the needle bearing on the cross
33 shaft, move the needle bearing in
radial direction and measure the
clearance between the cross shaft and
the needle bearing.

Clearance between the cross shaft and the
needle bearing:
Vehicle Torque
1051 series 0.012~0.061 mm
1061 series 0.014~0.070 mm
1089 series 0.016~0.071 mm

If the clearance is beyond the limit range, replace
with a new cross shaft.
