Chayei Adam - K’lal 146 - Laws of the Succah

]30[ Ideally, one should not support the s’chach with something which is
susceptible to tumah. 133 Therefore, one should not use the wagon’s ladders or
those which are attached to the walls to feed the animals [to support the s’chach],
as they are considered utensils and are therefore susceptible to tumah. 134
Similarly, [he should not use] ladders that hold the rungs, and certainly not other
utensils such as hoes or shovels. He shouldn’t even put them on top of the
s’chach to hold them in place, 135 as this is banned lest he come to use them for
s’chach. [However] that which we place beams resting on top of stone walls [is
permitted] because it isn’t logical to make such a ban. 136 However, this is all

l’chatchila, if it is possible. However, if it is not possible such as one who doesn’t
have anything else or if he already made the succah, we hold that one may
support the s’chach with something which is susceptible to tumah. According to
all opinions, however, it is permitted to connect the support beams with iron nails
since the s’chach doesn’t rest on the nails, but rather [they serve to] strengthen
the beams, and this is permitted according to all opinions. 137 Similarly, one may

                                                        םדו רשב
              133. The mishna (Succah 21b) teaches that s’chach, to support it. (See also Bach, who
one may use the sides of his bed (or maintains that such a succah is absolutely
headboard and footboard) to support the posul.) Although the Shulchan Aruch makes no
s’chach, however R’ Yehuda forbids it. direct mention of this opinion, it might be
Amoraim dispute what R’ Yehuda’s reason alluded to (629:7 - See note 135 regarding the
might be: According to one opinion, R’ Yehuda ladder, below). The poskim therefore write
rules that such a succah is not valid because it that ideally, one should not support his
is not permanent enough to qualify as a s’chach with something which is not valid to
succah. The other opinion says that the use as s’chach (such as metal bars ) in
                                                                                               חק
problem here is because he supports the fulfilment of this opinion. However one may sit
s’chach with something which is not valid for in a succah which was already constructed in
s’chach, which is a rabbinic ban, lest he come violation of this opinion (Mishna Berura, Shaar
to use such materials for the s’chach itself Hatziyun).
                                                                    טק
(Rishonim ). Although the halacha generally
                       וק
follows the opinion of the Chachamim (i.e. the 134. The Terumas Hadeshen writes that one
first opinion of the mishna) and this is indeed may cover his succah with wooden ladders
the ruling of most rishonim (Rosh, Rambam, since, as a plain wooden utensil (‘peshutei kli
Baal HaMaor), the Ran writes that one may eitz’) it is not susceptible to tumah. However,
                                                                                           יק
                           זק
not use a material which is not valid for other rishonim (Ramban, Rashba) are doubtful.
