7. Radio communication

You can't just talk however you want when communicating via an aircraft radio.

It has to be done in very specific ways and using very specific phrases.

7.1 Establishing a radio connection

When you want to connect to a station, you tune your radio to the station's

frequency. You listen for a few seconds to make sure you are not interrupting an

ongoing communication.

An initial call consists of saying the name of the station followed by your full call

sign, e.g. (for OY-CTZ):

➢ Herning Radio, OSKAR YANKEE CHARLIE TANGO ZULU

The ground station then calls back, possibly with an abbreviated call sign, e.g.:

➢ OSKAR TANGO ZULU, Herning Radio (COM)

Now the communication is initiated and you are introduced to each other,

subsequent communication can take place without the use of call signs.

The phrase "COM" or “Go ahead” can be used, which means that you should

make your message.

If the stations have an uninterrupted dialog call signs can be omitted, if no

misunderstandings can occour.
